What is Internetworking
Internetworking is the process of connecting a computer network with many other networks using special machines called gateways or routers. This type of network provides a common method of routing packets between the different networks. The entire system of interconnected networks is called an internetwork or internet.
Internetworking is the art & science of connecting individual LANs to create WANs and also connecting WANs to form even larger WANs. Internetworking is extremely complex because it generally involves into connecting networks that use different protocols. Internetworking is accomplished with routers, gateways and bridges.
There are many networks available throughout the world, They are all with different types of hardware and software. Generally people connected to one network often want to communicate with people attached to a different network. This desire requires connecting together different and frequently incompatible networks, sometimes by using gateways (One types of machines) to make the connection and provide necessary translation, both in terms of hardware and software. A collection of interconnected networks is called an internetwork or just internet.
A common form of internet is a collection of LANs connected by a WAN. An internetwork is formed when dissimilar networks are connected together. In short , connecting a LAN and a WAN or connecting two LANs forms an internetwork.
What can we do with internetworking?
We can do lot of things with internetworking. I use mostly internet to learn any new technology. You may use for sending mails. Your friend may use if for chatting. Some body may use it for doing video chat with loved ones. We send and receive many types of files. We can instruct anybody in the world to do some specific work. In this way there are lot of advantages by having internetworking today. Today many businesses are running just because of internet. We can share the information instantly with anybody.
We can connect two or more office local area networks using internetworking. We work together by sitting at different geographical locations and can work on the same document or file simultaneously. We can work from anywhere in the world just because existing of internet. I can write my articles from my village with a laptop and internet connection. There are many ISP providers are there to connect us with existing internetwork.
The Internet protocols are the world’s most popular open-system protocol suite (TCP/IP). These protocols are nonproprietary because they can be used to communicate across any set of interconnected networks and these are equally well suited for LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) communications.
In simple terms Internetworking is LAN to LAN, LAN to MAN, LAN to WAN, MAN to MAN, MAN to WAN and WAN and WAN connectivity. The resulting network will become very big WAN. This is possible only with the routers. We have to depend upon telecommunication networks to connect these devices from one location to another or one building to other, one city to another…etc
