What is human mind and its levels of function
The mind is a function of the body and it cannot exist independently. The body and mind are interrelated and interact with each other. The mind is a result of various mental processes like feeling, wishing, thinking, knowing, remembering and reasoning. The mind grows as body grows. With every experience the mind grows further.
Mind is nothing but mental process of thinking about something by a human body. We take an example of doing exercise daily. We know that the physical exercise keeps a human body in healthy and energetic condition. We will get good respect in social life. People will praise us by seeing us in good shape of body. Doing of physical exercise is a thought of a human mind. With this thought we do the exercise daily. There is no body without mind. The body without mind considered as dead body. The mind grows with each and every movement we learns something. As we learn the mind of ours will grow.
I have started my career in 1996 as computer hardware engineer. I have done my diploma in electronics with specialization in communication engineering. There is no much relationship between my study and job. I learned computer hardware while working. My mind was filled with electronics subject during those days. Now my mind is with full of different technologies. Like! Now I am writing an article about mind which helps me to pass my degree examination as well becoming content of my blog. I am thinking about in many angles like passing examination by learning about mind, getting content for my blog, sharing information with my blog readers, earning money from this article, expecting praises from my readers, feeling good about learning English language etc… I am thinking means my mind giving instructions to do all these. My mind grown from the time when I was doing only hardware servicing to doing many things like doing hardware services, software programming, websites designing, social activities and earning money online…etc. This is the power of mind. As the time passes I always try to learn something so that my mind grows.
The mind functions at three levels. They are conscious, preconscious, unconscious levels.
Conscious: A person is aware of his mental processes at this level. Examples of conscious process are observation, thinking, reasoning and imagination.
Doing something with our knowledge is conscious process. We know want we do in this state of mind level. The People around us also behave in the same way as we. I observe something or persons while I am waiting at my son’s school. I imagine myself as film actor while doing my yoga or exercise. The imagination of being an actor motivates me to do exercise in better way with better mood. That is way I am getting good result of my body shape. This type of actions is called as mind’s conscious function.
Preconscious (subconscious): The consciousness is temporarily missing. An example is the constant ticking of clock. One becomes aware of it once it stops ticking suddenly.
We will understand this state when there is a sudden incident takes place, otherwise we will know about this state of action.
Unconscious: A person is unaware of unconscious processes. These processes cannot be made conscious unless special methods of psycho-analysis are used. The unconscious part of mind stores all past experiences, repressed desires, wishes and fears.
The person doesn’t know about the action he is doing himself in this type of mental function of a person’s mind. This type of situation comes mostly in the event of a person met with an major accident. Some persons will have this type of state of mind level by birth. These people doesn’t aware of what they are doing.
Relationship between body and mind
Mental functions and physical conditions affect each other (Interactionism). The nervous system and endocrine glands are responsible for one’s mode of thinking, feeling and wishing. Some examples of mind affecting bodily functions are as follows:
All motor activities are motivated by the mind.
Fear causes cold sweat
Worry causes headache
Emotional conflicts cause psychosomatic illness like peptic ulcer.
Some examples of the physical conditions affecting the mental processes are as follows:
Concentration is difficult in a state of fatigue.
Hyper function of the thyroid gland causes restlessness.
Constipation can cause headache.
