Ordering of numbers

Today my son’s class work in mathematics is about ordering of numbers. In this topic i am going to teach him the importance and use of comparing numbers. His teacher told him about procedure to comparing two numbers as follows.

First Let us Compare total number of digits in given numbers. Then, we compare the digits in thousand’s place, next, in the hundred’s place and lastly we compare in ten’s and one’s place.

Compare using >, > We use these mathematical symbols to compare two numbers. We can compare any size numbers. Symbol ‘>’ is called greater than and Symbol  ‘<’ less than.

Examples are:

  • 1375 < 7496

As per above explonation of comparing numbers we should compare total number of digits in each number. we have 4 digits in each number so that we can not use this parameter to compare two numbers. Next, we should compare digits in thousand’s place. We have digit ’1′ in first number and digit ’7′ in second number in thousand’s place. So result of digits in thousand’s place in both numbers is 1 < 7. So that 1st number is less than second number. So the above expression is correct.

Some more examples are:

  • 887 < 8098 (We used total number of digits here to compare two numbers)
  • 9406 > 1936 (We compared digits in thousand’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 1487 > 1346 (We compared digits in hundred’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 3020 < 3090 (We compared digits in ten’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 4214 < 4219 (We compared digits in one’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 9001 > 6021 (We compared digits in thousand’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 2469 < 6468 (We compared digits in thousand’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 4240 < 4359 (We compared digits in hundred’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 6914 < 6975 (We compared digits in ten’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 8804 < 8806 (We compared digits in one’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)
  • 7945 > 1945 (We compared digits in thousand’s place of both the numbers to get total comparison)

With this explanation you can understand better bout ordering of numbers concept. For any further comments please welcome in my comments section.
