How to recover oracle database in an sap system

Recovering database from backup files of oracle database in an sap system can be done using BRTOOLS very easily. I will show you this experiments using my working SAP Netweaver system. I have installed Netweaver 7.31 on oracle 11.2.0.3.0 and taken offline backup and also done archivelog backup. All these files are located in folder c:oracledevsapbackup I have taken this backup as per the steps mentioned in my previous post on how to perform complete offline backup of an sap system.

Before recovering from backup, you have to shutdown the database and delete one data file from any of the sap data folders. Ex: c:oracleDEVsapdata2sr3_1SR3.DATA1

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Shutdown the database using the command. ‘brspace -c force -f dbshut’ (C:Usersdevadm>brspace -c force -f dbshut)
  2. Now delete the file SR3.DATA1 from c:oracleDEVsapdata2sr3_1SR3.DATA1
  3. Now, try to start the database using the command ‘brspace -c force -f dbstart
  4. You will get the message ‘BRSPACE will terminated with errors’ in the screen
  5. Now, You have to start BRTOOLS to recover the database
  6. Once you get the BR*Tools menu, Select the option ‘Restore and Recovery’ which is ‘5’ option
  7. In the ‘Restore and Recovery’ menu enter ‘c’ and hit enter.
  8. In the BRRECOVER options for restore and recovery input menu, type ‘c’ and hit enter
  9. Again type ‘c’ and hit enter
  10. Again type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Complete database recovery main menu’
  11. Type ‘y’ and hit enter to execute the action
  12. Now, You will be informed that the file that you have deleted will be restored/recreated and recovered message
  13. Type ‘c’ and hit enter
  14. Now the option shows is ‘Select database backup’ (= indicates the next action will be performed)
  15. type ‘c’ and hit enter in Complete database recovery main menu again
  16. Database backups for complete database recovery will be displayed, Type ‘c’ and hit enter
  17. Now the = sign shifts to Restore data files in the complete database recovery main menu, type ‘c’ and hit enter
  18. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘BRRESTORE main options for restore of database files’ input menu
  19. Again type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Additional BRRESTORE options for restore of database files’ input menu
  20. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the confirmation of command is going to be executed
  21. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the confirmation of the file will be restored from the selected database backup
  22. You should see that the message ‘Execution of BRRESTORE finished with return code 0’
  23. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Complete database recovery main menu’
  24. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Archivelog files to apply of database instance DEV’ List display
  25. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Applying archivelog files of database instance DEV
  26. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Applying archivelog group of database instance DEV’ Imput menu
  27. Type ‘c’ and hit enter for the message given message ‘Archivelog file with sequence number 105 of database instance DEV will be applied now’
  28. Type ‘c’ and hit enter again
  29. Now the = sign shifts to ‘8’ option, i.e Open database and post processing option
  30. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the’Complete database recovery main menu’ Control menu
  31. Type ‘c’ and hit enter when the message ‘Database instance DEV will be shutdown now in mode ‘IMMEDIATE” displayed
  32. Type ‘c’ and hit enter in the ‘Options for opening database instance DEV’ Input menu
  33. Type ‘y’ to execute the action
  34. Now the database instance will be started
  35. Now you can exit the program by selecting ‘9’ option in the ‘Complete database recovery main menu’ Control menu
  36. Type ‘y’ when you see the question ‘Do you really want to exit BRRECOVER?
  37. Type ‘c’ to continue
  38. Type ‘c’ and hit enter
  39. Type ‘b’ and hit enter in the ‘Complete database recovery main menu’ control menu
  40. Type ‘s’ to cancel the BRRECOVER
  41. Type ‘y’ to confirm the cancel BRRECOVER
  42. Type ‘b’ and hit enter to go back to the BR*Tools main menu
  43. Type ‘9’ for Exit program and Type ‘y’ to come out from BR*Tools program
  44. You will see the C:usersdevadm prompt
  45. Now execute the following command at C:Usersdevadm> command prompt
  46.  ‘brspace -c force -f dbshut’  once the database is shutdown
  47. You have to start the database again using ‘brspace -c force -f dbstart’
  48. Database will be started without any errors
