You will be learning how to extend tablespace in the oracle database of an SAP system in this article. BRTOOLS – ( 2) Space Management will be used to extend tablespace in the oracle database of an SAP system

Database space management:

Space management is one of the choice in the Choice menu  1 of BRTOOLS. As soon as you type BRTOOLS at command prompt and hit enter, you will get a Choice menu 1 of BRTOOLS. You can use Choice menu 1 for performing any type of oracle database administration in an SAP system. By selecting Space management from Choice menu 1, you can see Choice menu 5 which called ‘Database space management’ menu. This menu will be used to administer space in the oracle database. In this article, I am demonstrating, how to extend tablespace in the oracle database in an SAP system.

Step-by-step procedure to extend tablespace in the oracle database of an SAP system.

  • In the choice menu ‘Database space management’ type letter c and hit enter. You can observe that there is a = sign in front of Extend tablespace
  • Input menu 81 ‘BRSPACE options for tablespace extension’ will be displayed
  • Type the letter c and hit enter
  • Again type the letter c and hit enter
  • Choice menu 301 ‘Tablespace extension main menu’ will be displayed
  • Type the letter c and hit enter. Observe that there is a = sign in front of ‘Extend tablespace’ option
  • List menu 302 ‘List of tablespaces for extension’ will be displayed
  • Type the corresponding number of tablespace that you want to extend and hit enter
  • Input menu 303 ‘Options for extension of tablespace’ will be displayed
  • Type the letter c and hit enter
  • Type the letter n for the question ‘Next data file can be specified now. Do you want to perform this actions?’ it will not create more than one data file if you type n
  • Control file copy, Data folder and file will be created
  • Switch to next online redo log file for database instance will be performed
  • Type the letter c and hit enter
  • Choice menu 301 ‘Tablespace extension main menu’ will be displayed
  • This time = sign is shown in front of ‘Exit Program’
  • Type the letter c and hit enter
  • Type the letter y in the next screen ‘Do you really want to exit the BRSPACE’ question
  • Execution of BRSPACE finished with return code must be displayed. You can confirm yourself that you have successfully extended your tablespace

Note: I have created a new tablespace in the oracle database before starting this experiment. I have used the same created tablespace for extending. You can also follow my strategy to learn this topic easily.  You can verify the data folder inside c:oracle<SID> after performing all the steps mentioned above. You can also start the SAP system and log in to it for checking added new data file using DBACOCKPIT transaction code.
