Virtual PC is Product of Microsoft Vmware is the different comapny which deals with Virualization. As Microsoft have their own products of virtualization, Vmware also have their products for the same As of now “Yes” , both are serving the same purpose. Virual PC is the microsoft product which is host based virtualization

what is host based?

Microsoft has introduced Hyper-V in Windows 2008 which is actually bare metel virualisation
The main Difeerence of Bare metel virtualization & host based vitualization is… For host based virualization the host actual OS (Like Windows 2003 or windows 2008 ) will be installed first … on top of that we will install the virtual mechines For Bare metel Virtualization the base OS is not required, directly we will install the Virual mechines on top of harware itself

The host based vitualisation consept is same in both Micrsoft & Vmware . Microsoft uses Virual PC 2005 or 2007 , where as Vmware users the products called VMware server & VMware workstation For Bare metal virualisation , i don’t know what is the technology behind in microsoft

But in Vmware , there is one software called ESX server (Its not actual OS , its like communicator biween the hardware & actual virual machines) will be istalled on top of the hardware So after installing the ESX server software on the server , we can create the multiple virual machines (By accesing this esx server remotely from your client PC)
